The ‘Victimas del Terrorismo’ Foundation in Spain, has awarded its Prize for the Defence of Human Rights to Margaret McKinney. Margaret is now 80 years old and she spent 21 of those years trying to recover the body of her son, Brian, who was assassinated by the IRA in 1978. She did not tire in demanding that the IRA tell her where she would find his body. She was presented with her award at a ceremony in the Zurbano Palace in Madrid on Wednesday by the Nobel Literature Prize winning author, Marío Vargas Llosa. He described terrorism as ‘a destructive and fierce force’ which is ‘a declared enemy of civilisation’. Mario Vargas Llosa practiced his English to tell Margaret McKinney as he presented her with the award that ‘We love you, we admire you and we follow your example, and we wish you the best’.
